Shahin al-Mosul is the only daughter of Farouk al-Mosul, a single-minded and self-made merchant who built an prosperous and independent network of trade with those people that dwelt in the more harsh and isolated regions of the Sands. She did not set foot in the Jewel proper until her fifteenth birthday, spending her youth on the road with her father, who boasted proudly that her growing talents as a merchant would far outstrip his own in the years to come.
The untimely and sudden death of her father only a few years later put this boast to the challenge, and Shahin rose to meet it head on. She personally took control of the trade network and successfully fought off numerous attempts by other independents and more than a few of the Dahabi to usurp the routes. Under her leadership, the network expanded even further, and she strengthened her ties to the Merchant Guild in the Jewel.
Her enormous talent for trade brought to the attention of the Council of Trade, whose leader at that time had been a close friend of her late father. Under his patronage, she flourished even more, and was well-positioned to exploit the troubles of the House of Dahab as they lurched towards internal strife.
But some have whispered that her actions during the Dahabi Civil War were not motivated by mere profit, but by a desire for personal vengeance for revenge on House Menjari. The same whisperers say her father had rejected a takeover offer from the Menjari not too long before his passing, slighting its head, Eda Ishan al-Menjari in the process. While it's true that most of the profit she made during the conflict came the expense of the Menjari, it's hardly proof of anything more than a shrewd operator.
But with the passing of the previous Councillor, Shahin's new wealth and influence allowed her to rise up in his place, easily triumphing over a Dahabi-backed candidate.
